g.  Design piping systems to prevent erosion corrosion.  Limit water
velocities to 8 feet-per-second for cold water copper alloy pipes.  Limit
water velocities to 4 feet-per-second for hot water and corrosive cold water
copper and copper-alloy pipes.
h.  Limit domestic hot water heaters and generators to 120 degrees F
storage temperature.  Use "sacrificial" booster heaters for dishwashers and
other appliances requiring higher temperature water.
Cathodic protection for corrosion control:
a.  Apply cathodic protection on all buried or submerged POL ferrous
piping, tanks and related facilities.  Under no circumstances will coated POL
facilities be installed underground or submerged without cathodic protection.
This requirement includes ferrous materials such as ductile iron.
b.  All buried or submerged cast/ductile iron pipe joints that have
cathodic protection or located in close proximity to impressed current CP
systems will be bonded with No. 4 A.W.G insulated wire.  Thermit wire
connections must be coated.
c.  All cathodic protection design must be based upon specific field
tests made at the construction site.  Tests would include soil resistivity
and water conductivity.
d.  All cathodic protection design must be performed by a National
Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) accredited "Corrosion Specialist".
The corrosion specialist must have a minimum of five years experience in the
design of cathodic protection systems.
e.  All installed cathodic protection systems must comply with the
corrosion protection criteria outlined in NACE Standard RP-01-69, as
currently revised.
f.  Cathodic protection is required on the-interior of all ferrous water
storage tanks.
g.  Install permanent test stations and pavement inserts as follows:
protect against burial, vehicular damage, vandalism, etc.; specify corrosion
resistant materials; provide adequate drainage; provide permanent
identification marking.
h.  Test stations should be located at least every 500 feet and pavement
inserts every 50 feet for pipelines.  Buried POL tanks should have at least
three test stations.
i.
Color code rectifiers, test stations, junction boxes, etc., blue and
white.
j.  Specify testing/approval of all insulating joints prior to project
acceptance.
