There are many phrases and statements that are placed on drawings which are
considered satisfactory in professional architectural and engineering practice
for private industry but which are not acceptable for government practice.
The following is s a list of some items found repeatedly on drawings submitted
by A/E firms.  After each discrepancy or group of related discrepancies, there
is the correct or preferred designation:
a)
Error:
"As instructed by the Architect"
Correct:
Should not be used, or, if necessary, use "as
directed" (Avoid this type of language, where
possible, since it indicates uncertainty as to what
the requirement is, and therefore, may not be biddable
by the contractor)
b)
Error:
"As approved by the Architect"
Correct:
"As approved" (Same comment as above)
c)
Error:
"By others"
"By the Navy"
"By the Naval Facilities Engineering Command"
Correct:
"By the government"
d)
Error:
"By
the
electrical contractor"
"By
the
plumbing contractor"
"By
the
plumber"
"By
the
elevator contractor"
Correct:
Should not be used (No statement is necessary.  The
government recognizes only the PRIME CONTRACTOR; the
assignment of work to subcontractors is the prime
contractor's responsibility and should not be done by
the designer.)
e)  In the event work which is shown on the drawings is not included in
the scope of the contract, use the following:
Correct:
"Not in contract"
"NIC"
"By the government"
"Government furnished equipment"
"GF/GI"  (Government Furnished/Government Installed)
f)
Error:
"12 GA zinc-coated steel flashing"
"Copper flashing"
Correct:
"Metal Flashing" (Metals are referred to only as
metals and not as a particular kind or gauge.  Kind
and weight are covered in the specification.)
g)
Error:
"Sheetrock"
"Formica"
Correct:
"Gypsum Board"
"Plastic Laminate" (Proprietary names are not
permitted.)
