excavation to uncover utilities will not be required, unless so
stipulated in the Appendix "A".
The topographic survey shall be performed only by qualified and
licensed Civil Engineers or Land Surveyors. The date of the survey
and basis of control shall be noted in the field notes, sketches and
drawings. A copy of the field notes shall be submitted to NORTHDIV
with the Design Analysis information for Civil Design at the Design
Development Submission.
15.5
Geotechnical Investigation
NOTE: IF APPLICABLE, THE NEED FOR A/E SAMPLING AND TESTING FOR SOIL
CONTAMINATION WILL BE SPECIFICALLY ADDRESSED IN THE APPENDIX "A".
NOT ALL PROJECTS INVOLVING SOIL CONTAMINATION WILL REQUIRE A/E
SAMPLING AND TESTING. IN SOME CASES, THE A/E NEED ONLY MAKE A VISUAL
INSPECTION OF THE AREA (AS PART OF THE EXISTING CONDITIONS SURVEY) TO
ARRIVE AT AN ESTIMATED QUANTITY OF CONTAMINATED SOIL TO BE REMOVED.
SUCH AN ESTIMATE IS USED FOR PURPOSES OF ESTABLISHING ESTIMATED
CONSTRUCTION COSTS AND FOR PURPOSES OF ESTABLISHING A BASIS OF BIDS
FOR CONSTRUCTION. SAMPLING AND TESTING OF SUCH SOIL, TO DETERMINE
THE EXACT AMOUNT REQUIRING REMOVAL, IS INCLUDED IN THE PROJECT
SPECIFICATIONS AS WORK BY THE CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTOR.
15.5.1
Soil Borings, Probes and Report
The A/E shall take soil borings and/or probes, perform testing,
prepare borings plans and logs, and prepare a soils report
delineating the results of the soils exploration program. Existing
site soil must be accurately tested, classified, and evaluated for
use on the project. Soils shall be classified in accordance with
ASTM D2487, "Classification of Soils for Engineering Purposes" and
the applicable 2 letter soil group symbols shall be indicated on the
soil borings. The number of soil borings and/or probes required and
testing requirements shall be established at fee negotiations. Take
at least two shallow (6 to 8 feet deep) borings in the area of new
parking. The A/E shall backfill all boring holes and patch pavements
as applicable.
The soils report shall summarize the soils exploration program,
including boring logs, test results and design assumptions and
analysis including specific interpretations and cautions. The soils
report shall account for the types and quality of soils present at
the site, indicate if and how they are suitable for reuse and, if so,
the proposed locations for reuse. The report must be explicit as to
whether existing soils are suitable for reuse as fill, backfill or
topsoil. The A/E shall analyze and interpret all necessary
information concerning foundation soil conditions and include, in the
preparation of drawings and specifications, complete and specific
coverage of procedures for foundation construction and for handling
unusual subsurface conditions. The soils report must not be used in
the specifications verbatim nor shall the contractor be referred to a
copy of the soils report at the ROICC office. Instead, the A/E shall
extract relevant data and insert it in the specifications and on the
drawings as required. Boring logs and probe data must be shown the
drawings.
