CHAPTER 18
STRUCTURAL DESIGN
18.1
General
The Structural portion of the design shall be prepared in a thorough,
logical manner which follows the normal construction sequence.  This
chapter covers specific technical requirements for typical Structural
design submissions.  Not all requirements will be applicable to all
projects.  In addition, this chapter deals only with technical
requirements applicable to those facilities most commonly procured by
NORTHDIV.  When applicable, additional Structural design requirements
for special or unique projects, such as piers, quaywalls, trestles or
bridges, will be separately addressed by NORTHDIV in the Appendix "A"
and subsequent A/E briefings.
General information on format and preparation of drawings,
specifications, cost estimates and design analysis are covered in
other chapters of the A/E Guide.  Refer to the Appendix "A" to
determine which design submissions are required for the project and
their respective due dates.
18.2
Site Investigation
Detailed requirements for structurally related site investigation
services, including an existing conditions survey and geotechnical
investigations (soil borings and probes and rock corings) are
detailed in the chapter titled "Site Investigation Services".
18.3
General Structural Design Requirements
18.3.1
Selection of Structural Systems
Structural systems shall conform to applicable DOD, Navy and other
government criteria and guidance referenced in the Appendix "A", as
well as industry standards and commonly accepted methods of practice.
Consider the following when selecting an appropriate structural
system:
a)
Cost effectiveness of structural system.
b)
Constructability.
c)
Maintenance considerations.
d)
Experience of local contractors.
e)
Availability of materials.
f)  Degree of field inspection required for a successfully
designed and constructed facility.  (NOTE:  Do not use masonry values
listed in DM-2.9, "Masonry Structural Design for Buildings", unless
special inspection is called for in the specifications.  The ROICC
does not provide special inspection.)
g)  Method of construction procurement (i.e., open competition
vs. restrictive/proprietary designs, materials or methods).
