Collection of Facts:  There are two different types of emergency, dry
breakaway couplings used by the Navy in fueling aircraft each with a
designated application and they are not interchangeable. The "shear pin" type
breakaway is used only on refueler trucks and requires an angle pull for
breakaway.  The spring loaded detent ball type requires an axial pull for
breakaway and is used on pantographs or other swivel type dispensing systems
which allow axial pull.
Solution:  Insure that the proper type breakaway coupling fits the service
application.  Otherwise, there may be no protection at all.
