SECTION 5. FIRE PUMPS
5.1
DIESEL ENGINE DRIVEN FIRE PUMPS
5.l.1
Diesel Fire Pumps: All pumps shall be diesel driven
pumps unless the installation can comply with Chapter 6 of NFPA 20
( 1 9 8 7 edition).
5.1.2
Fire Pump Rotation: Pump rotation for diesel engine
driven fire pump shall be clockwise.
5.2
FIRE PUMP DESIGN
Pump Installation: All pump installations shall include

a flow meter in addition to a test header. The flow meter shall not
discharge into the suction feed main supplying the fire pump. An
approved butterfly valve shall be installed downstream of the flow
meter.
Separate Bypass: All fire pumps taking suction from

s t r e e t mains shall be equipped with a separate bypass.
Isometric Piping Details: A l l contract drawings shall
5.2.3
c o n t a i n an isometric piping details of each fire pump installation.
Remote Alarms: All pump installations shall have remote
5.2.4
alarms in a constantly occupied location.
5.3
FIRE PUMP CONTROLLERS
Primary Resistors: P r i m a r y resistors on electric fire

pump controllers shall be enclosed in a cabinet separate from the rest
of the controller components. A l l electric fire pump controllers
s h a l l be primary resistor type reduced voltage starting controllers.
Pressure Sensing Lines: Each pump controller shall have

individual pressure sensing lines taken from the system side of the
pump.
SALT WATER FIRE PUMPS: fill salt water fire pumps shall

have special metallurgy or coating systems in accordance with
manufacturer's recommendations.
5.5
FIRE PUMP LOCATIONS
Provide emergency lighting in
Lighting of Pump Rooms:

fire pump rooms.
Drains in Fire Pump Rooms: Fire pump rooms shall be

provided with adequate floor drains and a drainage system to the
e x t e r i o r of the building. C i r c u l a t i o n relief valves shall be piped to
t h e outside of the building. A l l test outlets to discharge safely
o u t s i d e of the building.
