AVOID USE OF THE FOLLOWING:
a.
Unfamiliar words, colloquial terms, jargon, and shipboard
terms. For example, do not use "bulkhead" for wall. "deck"
f o r f l o o r . o r " h e a d " for toilet. Where unusual technical
and trade expressions must be incorporated due to the
n a t u r e of the product or service, it is frequently
d e s i r a b l e to define these expressions in the
s p e c i f i c a t i o n . In short, technical knowledge will be of
l i t t l e value unless the specifier clearly communicates the
s p e c i f i e r ' s needs in the specification. Remember, the
s p e c i f i c a t i o n will also be used by nontechnical personnel.
Abbreviations and acronyms. Exceptions: Use abbreviations

for Units such as psi, cfm, and kw and be consistent in
t h e i r use. If necessary, use only standard, well
understood abbreviations which are in common usage and not
s u b j e c t to misinterpretation in the specification. Spell
out the full meaning of the abbreviation or acronym the
f i r s t time it is used in each specification section,
f o l l o w e d by the abbreviation in parentheses: thereafter use
o n l y the abbreviation (e.g.. state "pounds per square inch
( p s i ) " then state "The _ _ _ is _ _ _ psi.") For metric
