Provide a combined system of soil entrapment to eliminate the trackage of
materials into a building, considering the following possibilities:
a.
A roughened walking surface.
b.
A grating with catch pan.
c.
Areas with special carpet for this purpose.
d.
e.
Runners.
f.
Footscrapes for snow/mud.
Use walk-off mats and/or ceramic tiles (quarry or paver) at building entry
points.
When selecting vinyl composition tile, choose 1/8 inch gauge, with the
pattern going full depth.
Avoid tiles or sheet vinyl with white as the predominate color.
No-wax
surfaces Should be limited to very low traffic areas.
A 4" X 4" or 8" X 8" ceramic floor tile will be easier to maintain than a
smaller tile because of less grout seams to catch soil.  A mottled or shaded
tile is also recommended over a flat overall color hide soiling.
