(a) ASME/ANSI A17.1, Safety code for Elevators and

Encl:
(1) Fire Protection Criteria for the Design and
Construction of Elevators
with respect to fire alarm systems, automatic sprinkler systems,
and the automatic shutdown of the main power supply for elevator6
in buildings with automatic sprinkler protection.
Background:
a.
Individual interpretations of references (a)
and (b) have caused problems concerning the requirements for
disconnecting the main power supply to elevators prior to the
activation of automatic sprinklers located in the elevator
hoistway or machine room. Additionally, the ASME/ANSI code has
failed to recognize and change some excesses in the referenced
requirements.
Implementation of the previous guidance on this
subject, Provided by reference (c), has proven to be
inconsistent.
Police Statement It is the policy of the Naval Facilities

Engineering Command (NAVFACENGCOM) to use the enclosed fire
protection criteria for the design and construction of elevators
in Naval facilities.
Action: NAVFACENGCON Engineering Field Divisions, Public

works Centers and Public works Departments will incorporate this
criteria in the design of new building or modifications to
existing facilities until such time that the discrepancies
between references (a) and (b) are resolved by ASME and NFPA-
This DPL supersedes reference (c). Existing certified elevators
are not retired to be modified to comply with this policy
change.
