Valve and Equipment Pits:
Provide adequate light and ventilation.
Design pit covers for easy opening, corrosion resistance and weather
tightness.  Secure all pit covers.
Design pits to be water tight from both rain and ground water intrusion.
Provide floor sump.  If water intrusion cannot be avoided, provide automatic
sump pump, protective coating suitable for immersion and sacrificial cathodic
protection (see "Corrosion Control").
Design pits to allow easy removal and replacement of valves and equipment
items.
Provide clearances around piping, valves, etc. to allow unobstructed
maintenance, repair, testing and calibration.
Provide permanent pit identification.
Consult with maintenance personnel on
requirements.
V.
Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning:
Piping:
a.  Install ample flanged spools and unions to allow easy replacement of
equipment, valves and devices, and to provide system expansion/modification
flexibility.
b.
Design to accommodate thermal expansion/contraction, vibration and
shock.
c.
Do not bury flanged, union or other mechanical piping joints.
d.  Provide adequate ventilation and water intrusion protection/drainage
for pipe casings and utility trenches.
e.  Install buried plastic warning tapes and tracer wires for buried
non-metallic pipelines.
f.  Slope piping and provide low point drains to allow evacuation of
g.  Install adequate valved flowmeters, temperature gauges and pressure
gauges to allow system balancing and troubleshooting.
h.  Size pipes to prevent internal erosion corrosion (especially copper
and copper alloy pipe).
i.  Size and specify control valves to provide near-linear performance
in accordance with established ASHRAE methods.
